Paul’s Story

Paul Blejwas, founder of Paul’s Pottery in Toms River, New Jersey, is an accomplished potter and basket weaver whose artistic journey began in an unexpected way. Over 20 years ago, he agreed to teach a lady friend line dancing, who introduced him to pottery making. What started as an agreement to teach her to dance led Paul to sign up for an eight-week pottery class! The relationship didn’t last, but something far more meaningful took root, his enduring passion for clay and the art of shaping it by hand.

In the early years, Paul experimented with bowls, vases, and decorative pieces, often struggling with form until he discovered pit firing, a Raku-inspired technique that captured his imagination with its raw, organic results. From barrel firing to horsehair, no two pieces were ever the same, and the unpredictability became part of his signature style. His first sale came from a class piece, and at his very first show, he sold 45 works, an experience that left him hooked for life. Since then, Paul has continued to refine his craft through workshops, experimentation, and persistence, creating pieces that balance both function and artistry.

Today, Paul’s pottery can be found at over 20 events each year, where admirers are drawn to the unique textures, techniques, and stories behind each piece. His love shines bright in every one of his one-of-a-kind pieces, from pit-fired vessels to horsehair pottery to functional traditional pottery, each carrying the organic beauty of fire and earth. His work blends timeless craftsmanship with a deeply personal artistic vision. He creates hand-thrown vessels, sculptural forms, and even woven baskets that honor natural textures and traditional techniques while expressing a refined contemporary style. Each piece reflects his philosophy that functional art should not only serve a purpose but also inspire connection, reflection, and beauty in everyday life.
